Overview
Beauty in the Mountains
Located just outside of Terra Alta, West Virginia, Pedlar Run is nestled into the lush mountains that make this place so special. With a population of less than 2,000, you’ll really feel like you’ve escaped to the middle of nowhere. The area is surrounded by idyllic forests and farms. In fact, for years I had driven by the trailhead and always thought it was a tractor path into a farmer’s field. As you descend from the farmland, you’ll drop into one of the most beautiful trails in the area.
Most of the trail runs in, around, and over a beautiful creek. When in the creek, the path is almost entirely large rocks so be prepared for a rough but fun ride. There are also steep banks you’ll have to traverse. High clearance is definitely recommended, although 4WD was rarely needed in dry conditions. It’s difficult to single out highlights because the entire trail is absolutely gorgeous and offers non-stop fun.

Get Out and Explore
Many trails in West Virginia are remnants of old country roads. Because of this, they are usually straight routes that offer limited space for exploration. Pedlar Run is a popular spot for locals, which has left the middle sections full of areas that I like to call playgrounds. These spots offer numerous approaches and tracks. This makes it great for groups with different vehicle types. Whether you have a full size truck, a four wheeler, or something in between, everyone can find something to enjoy. It also give you more opportunity to explore and spend more time on the trail. There’s also plenty of space to get out and explore the surrounding flora and fauna, which I didn’t take advantage of while recording the trail.
After a long day on the trail, I highly recommend visiting High Ground Brewing. It has some of my favorite local beer and the outdoor space is great. While you’re in the area, Cranesville Swamp is a wonderful spot to see unique habitat and enjoy a nice stroll.
