Connecting the Dots
Graveyard Hill is a great trail and I was so excited when I first found it. If you’ve hit Gallagher Ridge heading north, simply cross the highway. With the lack of the large public lands found in the west, it’s always fun to be able to piece multiple roads together to create a larger experience. As you start out, you’ll pass by houses, and it even seems like you’re going dead end at a house but the road goes right by it. Many of the old public roads in West Virginia are like this. As the state ignores them, whoever owns the land will often just erase the roads or block them off. This is one of the more nerve racking parts of mapping the trails. You never know when someone is going to come out angry that you’re on “their” property. Hopefully, you can rest assured knowing someone has already been through.

Hitting the Pool
This trail has significantly more water and mud than Gallagher Ridge. The first obstacle you’ll come to is a deep mud pit. There is a detour if you want to avoid it. When I was last there, it hadn’t rained a ton but the water was still between 2 and 3 feet deep. I’;d recommend high clearance and checking the depth just to be safe. The bottom is a little soft but if you keep moving you shouldn’t have any issues. The rest of the trail is pretty easy. There’s more mud but nothing to worry about. I would recommend higher clearance but if you are careful, even a stock wrangler or similar should be fine without bottoming out.
