Craft Beer Blossoming in WV
High Ground Brewing has long been on my list of breweries to try but I only recently made the trip. I’ve tried many of their beers in Morgantown but the experience is always better at the brewery itself, or so I always hope. You can usually find small-batch brews that may not be available elsewhere. With small breweries, like those in West Virginia, you often get to meet the owners or employees with a hand in crafting the beer. Best of all, it gives me an excuse to explore another part of West Virginia. High Ground Brewery did not disappoint.
Rural Breweries
Being about an hour from Morgantown, we don’t find ourselves in Terra Alta very often, but there were a few old roads I wanted to explore for off-road potential. One of the trails starts right up the road from High Ground so we had the perfect opportunity to stop in on our way through. As avid birders, we do question the depiction of the eagle on the logo. Thankfully, everything else is wonderful, and with little else to do in the area, it’s a great addition to the town.
High Ground Brewery’s Atmosphere
The space is tucked off of the main road and I was extremely happy to see such a large outdoor section. This is something we lack in Morgantown. Dressed in reclaimed, rustic wood, the brewery is right at home in rural West Virginia. The interior is a smallish, open space where the tap list takes center stage. The offerings were well balanced with various IPAs, pilsners, stouts, lagers, and even mead. The woman behind the counter was extremely friendly and wanted to hear all about our cameras and Instagram page.

The Space and Food
Outside, it was instantly apparent this space was set up for people to enjoy one of the best parts of West Virginia, being outside. They leave plenty of space for people to bring their dogs, let the kids run around, and play games like cornhole. One corner is set aside for their food trucks. The brewery itself has a fairly small food menu, but with regular food trucks, they can offer more variety and a little excitement to the typical brewery fare. Unfortunately, we didn’t partake (don’t forget to bring cash!) but it looked and smelled amazing.
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the trip. With delicious beer and great outdoor space, it had exactly what I want on a summer day. We plan on visiting more often and it should be on any beer lovers list, whether they live here or are just traveling through.
